Alex Finkelstein

General Partner

Writer, hockey player, education advocate, aspiring chef.

Alex likes to invest in unlikely, non-obvious startups led by entrepreneurs who are driven to connect, rather than copy. He likes to partner with founders building consumer marketplaces and other businesses that take advantage of network effects.

One of the biggest areas for opportunity today lies in organizing and connecting disparate people, things and information at massive scale to unlock hidden value. Doing this well requires an insider’s view into sectors most people choose to ignore, such as stock trades, estate sales, African education, and arrests.

He has led Spark’s investments in 5min Media (acquired by AOL), Everything But The House, GetYourGuide, IEX, Linkwell, Mark43, Privlo, peerTransfer and Wayfair (NYSE:W).

Prior to joining Spark, Alex created and produced of a number of television shows that he sold to major networks, including FOX, E!, Discovery, ITV1 (U.K.) and Yahoo. Previously, Alex was an investor with Seed Capital Partners and Grandbanks Capital, early-stage venture firms formed in partnership with Softbank. He also worked as an analyst at Cambridge Associates.

Alex is on the Board of Directors of the Brooke Charter Schools. Brooke is the largest public charter school network in Boston. Brooke’s students, who come from 78% low-income and 98% minority families, achieve the highest MCAS scores for any public school in Boston. Alex is also on the Board of Directors of Youth Cities, a program that introduces high school students to social entrepreneurship. Alex holds a B.A. in political science from Middlebury College.
